News Update & Annual Meeting Information

Greetings Mason Mill Civic Association Neighbors -

Thanks to everyone who helped make last weekend's Spring Picnic a success. (Special thanks to our Executive Chefs, Ann Hudson and Suzanne Phillips, for once again taking charge of the grills and making sure we all had plenty of hot food and cold drinks!)

A few short news items:

  • Remember that our MMCA Annual Meeting -- a general meeting with officer elections -- is next Sunday, May 15. We will be meeting at Intown Community Church, Room 213, from 3:00pm - 5:00pm. Apart from choosing the leadership for the coming year, our main discussion item will be the traffic calming proposal for Mason Mill Road. Watch your mail boxes during the coming week for more specific information about the plan. And if you are interested in helping serve the neighborhood, please consider running for one of the officer positions and joining the MMCA leadership team!

  • Emory Commencement is on Monday. The entire Clifton Corridor area will be jammed with traffic starting very early in the morning, so plan accordingly. (Those of you planning to shoot a cannon down Clifton Road are advised to wait until approximately 2pm.)

  • The next Open House for the Clifton Corridor transit initiatives will be on Thursday, May 19 (see their flyer image below). Next year's infrastructure funding referendum is starting to take shape, and some specific transit and road projects are rising to the top of the Metro area's wish list -- so it's a good time to check in and see how *our* area's needs are being addressed by these plans. (Facebook users can stay informed by "Liking" their page.)

  • I am sorry to report the passing of longtime Mason Woods Drive resident David Sencer. Dave was the Director of the CDC from 1966 to 1977 and played a major role in developing what later evolved into Emory's Rollins School of Public Health. His death merited an extensive obit in the New York Times, in which current CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden was quoted, "Dave Sencer was a public health giant." Our thoughts are with Jane and the Sencer family.

Hope to see you next weekend at the Annual Meeting.
Patrick Noonan,
President, Mason Mill Civic Assn.
