Mason Mill Civic Association neighbors -
Spring has sprung! A good week to walk in our always-lovely WDT Park (and admire the restoration work we've started doing near the picnic area, if you happen by there!)
Here's a roundup of some important neighborhood news -- and key dates for the spring.
***** Crime *****
Be alert! Recent reports indicate a small flurry of crimes in the neighborhood in the past two weeks (auto break ins on McConnell and Houston Mill, and a burglary on Mason Mill). You can keep up to date on all district activity by signing up on their web site. (iPhone users: They have recently released a mobile app, in addition to their web site and email service.)
***** Primary & Alcohol Voting, March 6 *****
In addition to the presidential primary election, the March 6 ballot will permit citizens of unincorporated Dekalb to decide whether to permit Sunday sales of alcohol, as permitted by a new state law. (Yes, many other areas in the metro Atlanta area already have held their local referenda; localities were permitted to schedule the vote alongside an existing ballot question or primary election, in order to reduce additional costs of conducting elections.)
***** Local Road Closings *****
Haygood Road (between the high school and Clifton Road) will be closed starting Friday evening, March 9, until early Monday morning, March 12, to permit construction of the new pedestrian overpass between Emory's pediatric centers.
That's *nothing* compared to what we have ahead of us this spring and summer, due to Atlanta Gas Light pipeline construction. We'll post a complete schedule soon - the short version is that Clifton Road is already experiencing minor delays (usually at night, through March), but that things get serious for us when Houston Mill Road is narrowed to a single lane during the day... starting mid-April and lasting all summer! Stay tuned.
***** Traffic Calming *****
Our street captains reported (as of Sunday) that we now have received at least *83* households' signatures. (That many in hand and confirmed, plus an additional 11 households whose signatures don't quite match the official property records and might need revision.)
Thanks to everyone who has helped us close in on our goal! We have until late April to deliver the required 99 households. If you have not yet signed, you move things along by contacting your street captain:

***** Spring Picnic *****
Save the date: Sunday, April 22, at WD Thompson Park, 4pm until dark. As the day draws closer, we will ask for RSVPs & volunteers, and suggest items to bring.
***** Annual Meeting *****
Save the date: Sunday, May 6, location tba (probably Intown CC), times tba (likely 4-6pm). As part of our business that day, we will hold officer elections for the coming year. I encourage anyone interested in helping serve the neighborhood to consider running for a position. We've got a great team, but some of us have been in our positions for several years now, and some fresh ideas and energy would be most welcome! As I myself said at last year's Annual Meeting, this current (third) term as President would be my last. Unlike my similar statement the year before, this time it's final - I want to take on Harvey Nation's job as "Immediate Past President" (and continuing member of the Executive Committee) but focus my additional volunteer energies on further conservation and restoration work in WDT Park. Other officers may also welcome a chance to hand over the reins. We will ask for formal nominations (and self-nominations) later in the spring, but if you're interested and have some questions now, don't hesitate to contact me, or any of the other officers.
***** Support the MMCA in 2012 *****
It's time to send in 2012 dues for the Association. (Still the best deal in town, at $10/year.) Please support the work of the MMCA by mailing a check, payable to Mason Mill Civic Association, to our Treasurer, Pat Brittain (856 Vistavia Circle, 30033).
